There’s no question that Google Analytics is an addictive application. It is easy to get sucked into looking at every conceivable nuance of your user base and how they are accessing your site. One common complaint of Google Analytics though is that they don’t do a good job of showing you real-time results. And since everything else is trending toward real-time these days, why wouldn’t your stats package.

Enter Chartbeat, a web-based analytics package that is narrowly focused on showing you real-time stats from your site. With Chartbeat you can actually see how users are actively engaging with your comment.

As with Google Analytics, once you install a few lines of code on your site you are good to go. From there you can monitor real-time numbers of how many users are currently on your site. You can also get immediate alerts whenever your site reaches unusual traffic numbers. This would typically tell you that some site is sending traffic your way or potentially that there is something wrong with one of your products.

As with most web-based tools today, Chartbeat also synchs into your Twitter account to track who is saying what about your company and products.

One of the most underestimated features of the site is the ability to replay certain time periods. This is a great feature to learn your user’s behavior in a crisis situation. What page did they go to first? What search terms did they enter at that exact moment that led them there?

Chartbeat also produces an iPhone app that allows for real-time traffic updates while you are away.

3 Reasons You Should Consider Adding Chartbeat:

  • You serve up signficant pageviews daily and want a better way to track what is going on than Google Analytics can provide.
  • Your business is centered around product launches and you need a better way to manage interest and expectations at launch.
  • You are in a business where site uptime is vital and you want to be notified of any issues at the moment they happen.

3 Reasons You Wouldn’t Want to Add Chartbeat:

  • You are a very niche site that receives low, periodic traffic and don’t need real-time results.
  • You can’t justify the $9.95 per month fee.
  • You don’t have access to the root files for your site to be able to add the few lines of code.
