A few weeks ago we wrote about Cushy, a simple Content Management System for web sites that enables sites that have already been built to add features of content management systems after the fact. This week we discovered a new simple CMS that takes the genre a step further. SurrealCMS is a free app that you add to specific regions of your site. To get started all you need is your FTP info and then you can begin defining which areas you want the ability to edit.

SurrealCMS is free for up to three websites and then zooms up to $25 per month. Beyond the site limit, the branding of the CMS is the only other difference between their free and pro version.

One of the big improvements Surreal gives users is rich photo editing. With Surreal you can resize, flip, rotate, and crop images.  You will also see live previews of all of your changes before they are actually live on your site.

3 Reasons To Give Surreal a Look:
  • You have a site that was built without a CMS but would like the ability to easily edit certain text and photo blocks frequently.
  • You have less than three sites and could take advantage of their ambitious free pricing plan.
  • You need a richer photo editing experience than the other simple CMS’s offer.

3 Reasons To Stay Away from Surreal:

  • You are already on a Content Management System and need the richer database support it provides.
  • You need to feature a news section with dynamically fed content from other pages in your site.
  • You control your domain information but don’t have access to the FTP settings for your site.

You can not only brand the PRO version with your logo, your clients can access if from any domain or sub-domain you choose, so it looks like it’s your very own product.

I’ve tried this CMS for a few clients and it’s pretty for a basic system. A lot of clients don’t want complete control over their sites – They are happy with being able update a “news” page for a schedule of events. This is perfect for them.

I have used Surreal for over a year now and find it good if you just want an editor for clients that just need to make basic updates like text and image updates. The problem is that websites are so much more than just those two things now. You would be unable to have a client edit features like blogs, image galleries, navigation menus, etc with Surreal. If you have a client with basic editing needs, then this is a good fit. Anything more I would go with a full database CMS.
