Whether you are a web developer or a small-business owner who has worked with a web developer, you are probably aware that font choices are sparse on the web. You may have spent years refining the look and feel of your print pieces and then told that none of those fonts will work on your web site. You may want your menu items to appear in a certain font and headlines to appear in a different font, but right now you are relegated to Times New Roman or Arial.

All of that is about to change with a few new startups focused on bringing fonts to the web. One site, Typekit, has a minimally-priced package that enables you to put nearly any font, anywhere on your site. One option for $24.99 per year allows you to use your own fonts that you may have legal access to. A second option starts at $49.99 per year and opens you up to a full library of fonts provided through Typekit.

Setting up these fonts is relatively simple and can be done with minimal HTML and CSS experience. There are other ways to accomplish this using Javascript but none are as simple as Typekit.

3 Reasons To Consider Using Typekit:

  • You always use a specific font in the headlines of your print pieces and want to do the same on the web.
  • You don’t do a lot of print publishing but want to establish a font style for your brand other than Arial or Times New Roman.
  • You understand the very basics of HTML or CSS and have access to change those files.

3 Reasons To Stay Away From Typekit:

  • Your font is similar to one of the system fonts currently readable on the web.
  • You don’t have access to any of the HTML or CSS code for your site.
  • You only need to use a special font in limited locations and can accomplish this with graphical replacements.
