Although this seems like a niche product on the surface, the fact is that every site needs a privacy policy and terms of service no matter how big or small they are.  Some people recycle the fine print from competitor sites.  Some people Google privacy policy and use the stock text that comes up in the first search results.

While both of these ways would probably legally protect the most basic of sites, legal isn’t something I want to leave to chance.  This is where LegalRiver comes in.  They have created a free web application for you to enter a few facts about your site and have it export a legally-binding document for you to cut and paste into your site.  They offer this service for both privacy policy and terms of service.

This app only asks you three questions – your business name, what information you store about your visitors, and your email address.  The most vital information is obviously the type of information you store about your visitors.  Legal River has built in logic that will add or delete specific chunks of the privacy policy depending on what you describe in this box.

3 Occasions You Would Use This:

  • You don’t have any legal copy on your site
  • You have the default legal copy that came with your template
  • You have a registration area on your site where you collect any level of customer data

3 Occasions You Wouldn’t Use This:

  • You have in-house legal counsel
  • You store encrypted social security or credit card numbers
  • You have a lawyer on retainer
